Remember that Tuesday classes are back at Old Arizona, 2821 Nicollet S.
Classes this week: We are working on the cross in Beginning classes, but for
fun I've added a turn that is easily successful, even with limited
experience. So even if you're brand new, you can come to the Black Dog or
any other tango dance and have a little fun on the dance floor- which is
what it's all about!
In Intermediate: I've been getting lots of questions about drags. These can
be quite fun and playful, or can make a follower feel like she's being
pushed over or doesn't know how to dance. So before the local leaders foist
this on any hapless followers, let's look at how to make them fun and
playful. We also throw in some Buenos Aires techniques in all classes, which
help to make your dance so good that people look forward to dancing with you
after they've returned from their BA trip.
Don't forget to stop in for a bit of wine, conversation and dancing at the
Milonga Martes. Starts about 9:30. 3142 1st Ave S.
This Saturday is the Black Dog milonga! Now that we have the music fixed,
we're looking at some fixes for the floor. But whatever the challenges, we
and the owners of the Black Dog always strive to make this a welcoming and
fun night.
Upcoming fun: (Yes, this is on Tuesday's class night - class is cancelled
that night!)
From Bob: "Mandrágora Tango is celebrating Barack Obama's
Inauguration by throwing an Inaugural Ball on January 20, the first day of
the Obama administration (and the first day of George Bush's unemployment!)
On that night, Barak Obama will prove to the world that he has more balls
than anyone on the planet. In addition to the 10 official Inaugural Balls in
DC, thousands of others will hold their own balls all over the country.
Mandrágora is known in Tango circles to have some really nice balls. In
fact, when it comes to live Tango music, Mandrágora has some of the biggest
balls outside of Argentina. But you don't have to be a tango dancer to be
excited by our balls. You just have to wanna party like it's 1999 (i.e.
before G.W.Bush was "elected"). However, in the spirit of national unity,
all are invited, including Republicans and those that voted for Nader in
2000.
We're going to play a broader variety of music than usual
(more swing, groove and Latin) and we're gonna DJ a lot of great party
tunes. We want to get everyone up and dancing, whether they can or not. We
can't wait to spin will.i.am's "Yes We Can" in honor of Obama and Beck's
"Loser" for the other guy.
We've rented out Patrick's Cabaret (3010 Minnehaha in South
Minneapolis) for the evening. Doors will open at 7:30 for a free
introductory tango lesson given by Ms. Lois Donnay, who has held many balls,
including a bouncing New Year's Eve one at Patrick's just a few weeks ago.
Mandrágora will take the stage at 9 for a joyous evening of dancing. This
will be a night to celebrate. Please feel free to bring anything that you
might normally bring to a party. (Minneapolis statutes prevent us from
saying any more than that).
We are asking for a $10 donation at the door. A portion of
the proceeds will be donated to John McCain's favorite charity, ACORN (You
know, the folks who "destroyed the fabric of democracy" by registering poor
people to vote)
We hope to see you there!
PS: We all know what a mess balls can leave, so we'd love it
if anyone can volunteer to help us clean up afterwards. Patrick's Cabaret
has a 3-page instruction sheet of how to clean up. Just let us know.
PPS: Kids are welcome.
PPS: Students can get in for $5
PPPS: Public Radio Members can pay $11."
Upcoming classes: I'll be starting a swing class at 8:00 on Wednesdays,
starting January 28th. If enough people register, we'll move the class to a
bigger location. This class will be necessary if you want to join Steve Lee
and me when we teach an upcoming swing/tango fusion class. More details to
follow! Very exciting!
