This week - milonga month starts! This biannual event (the other one is in
August) is really popular, and I've been getting a lot of interest in it. If
you have been away from tango for awhile, this is a great time to get back
in. Milonga is fun, and can be easier to start than tango. So it cements
your tango technique in a painless way. Lots of my best students started
close to Milonga Month.
We are welcoming Madhan, a tango transplant from Kansas City tonight at
Milonga Martes. He heard about me from his friend who took lessons from me
in Buenos Aires, and is eager to join the MN tango scene. Come and make him
welcome! 9:30, 3142 1st Ave S.
The Wednesday Swing class level is intermediate. 8:00 3142 1st Ave S. You
can still join, but give me a call first!

Remember the outdoor milongas at Mears Park? When TSoM was young, a few of
us (mostly Frank Williams) were really pumped to have an outdoor tango
dance. Some of us had visited other communities with outdoor tango - Boston,
San Francisco, Buenos Aires, - plus we had some impromptu, lovely, moonlit,
and very illegal dances on the Nicollet Island bridge (as the police
confirmed).
Everyone was charged with scouting locations. We wanted a bridge, but that
seemed impossible. I forget who found Mears Park, a lovely park in downtown
St. Paul with a little stream and twinkly lights. The artificial lighting
was almost like moonlight, and there was a little covered stage. It was
beautiful!
The first years, we had two outdoor milongas. They were free, with a lesson
beforehand. The logisitics were not easy, as the sound system had to be
carried in, the electrricity had to be turned on by the Park Board, and the
surface was a brutal brick and cobblestone that had to be treated with white
sand several times a night. (Dan Larson was the clever one who brought his
lawn spreader to make application easier.) But the ambiance was the best.
It was extremely popular, not only among the tango folks but the general
public. It was cool enough that we were able to get lots of publicity, so we
had lots of visitors. After the first years TSoM reduced it to just one
night, then one year cancelled it because it conflicted with another event.
So that was the end of the Mears Park outdoor milongas.
You'll get to see some pictures at the Feb. 14th TSoM anniversary event.
