Classes:
It's still milonga month! This Tuesday and next in Beginners class, we will have a guest teacher while I am out preparing for a performance. David Sheroman has been dancing tango longer than just about anyone in the tango community. His milonga is especially fun, so you will want to get his insights on this so simple yet so complex dance. Thursday class will focus heavily on traspie. This really makes milonga fun, but leading it without problems, and following it without missing, makes or breaks the whole thing. Tricky but rewarding! Saturday class is also milonga - this is a great class to come to for some extra attention, because we don't have a time limit of 1 1/2 hour. We can hang out afterward and discuss the music or Buenos Aires or whatever else comes up.

Don't forget - door code for Old Arizona is 24135

Dancing:
The Tuesday party is on as usual. Come check it out! 9:30 PM

The Black Dog is Saturday. As many of you know, Saturday is the wedding of two of my students Naseema and Ted, so I will be occupied there. But that means we get to hear the music of one of the Tango Community's first DJ's, Dave Sheroman. David was one of our original community DJ's, and has a wonderful music collection and an understanding of the music that you will find interesting. Plus he might have the energy to dance! 8:00 to midnight, Prince and Broadway Streets, St. Paul. $5

Next Week
I know that a lot of you are looking forward to the next Outdoor Milonga, but that Saturday (23rd) I will be attending another wedding of two of my students, so I cannot do it. This milonga is way too much work to ask someone else to run, and the Tango Society of MN has elected not to assist, so we won't do one in August. If the weather holds, and Sea Salt is still willing, we will try again in September.

Conflicting advice?
Move your hips, don't move your hips, bend your knees, don't bend your knees, and it goes on. The bad new is that, yes, you are getting conflicting advice, and you're seeing things on the floor that your teacher told you not to do. Learning Tango is a process. Where you begin is not where you will be in one year, and you will continue to refine your "style" as you progress. But timing is essential - during the dance and in your tango progress. Yes, you can move your hips in "Salsa-like" fashion, change your connection, put in embellishments, but when you do that can make, or ruin, your partnership and the dance. When you are ready, and understand the dance, you will be able to do these things. Stick to the basics until your body is comfortable with the timing. Private lessons with an experienced teacher who understands these things and respects your level can greatly help you "stay out of the weeds".
