May 12, a massive earthquake, measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale, rocked the
mountainous region in China's Sichuan Province, resulting in the deaths of
68,877 people—with 367,854 injured and 17,974 still missing. In a matter
of minutes, more than 5 million people were made homeless (imagine roughly the
population of Minnesota). 117 aftershocks ranging from 4 – 6 on the
Richter scale continued in the Sichuan area; the last quake was as recent as
June 22. It is one of the worse natural disasters in the recent history of
mankind. Many cities, towns, and villages need to be rebuilt.
