MN  Music Cafe now has Salsa & Latin dancing every Thursday night with

Friday-Sunday, February  20-22:  USA Dance hosts Star of the North ballroom  
competition for  amateurs at the Ukrainian Event Center (301 Main Street  NE, 
Minneapolis).  More info coming soon, or visit _http://sotn.usadance-mn.org_ 
(http://sotn.usadance-mn.org/) .  New this year:  Single heats for  Newcomer, 
Bronze, Silver, and Novice.  Lower prices.  No membership  requirements (this 
is not a sanctioned competition).  More West Coast  Swing, Lindy Hop, and 
Argentine Tango competitions and seminars.  More  social dancing on Friday.  No 
charge to the "more advanced" dancers for  mixed-proficiency.




Friday, February  20th:  Hamline University Swing Dancers are hosting a swing 
dance from  9:00-11:00pm with introductory lessons at 8:00pm.  $2 per person. 
 Open to the public.  Hamline University's Jazz band will be playing  music.

SPECIALTY WORKSHOPS at Tropical Ballroom!  Saturday, March 7th,  2009.  $25 
per person, per  workshop session.  Optional coordinating DVDs to the workshops

1.  Understanding How to Hear Music 
*Music  Recognition (placing the dance to the song).   
*Understanding Rhythms (understanding down beats,  high beats, slows & quicks 
in dance steps).   
*How to  choose which dance for a song when there are multiple dances that 
could fit.   
*The break  on 1 or on 2 (i.e. cha-cha vs. cha-cha-cha; mambo vs. salsa). 
*Dances  with 2 types of basic rhythm (i.e. foxtrot: slow, slow, quick-quick 
vs. slow,  quick-quick) 
*Understanding the basic rhythm for each  dance 
11:30am-12:50pm 
2. Feet,  Body, Frame, & Spins 
*When to  use toe leads, heel leads, flat, rise, etc. of smooth and rhythm  
dances 
*Weight  changes (positioning your body over your foot), holding or 
syncopating when  appropriate 
*Arm  frame, (different holds for rhythm and smooth dances), and hand-holding 
 dances 
*Pivots-  forward, back, and ending side forward and back 
*Spins-  forward, back 
*Postures  for each dance 
1:00pm-2:20pm 
3. Social  Dance Floor Tips 
*Rules for  Leaders & Followers (Left foot, Right foot, Action, Reaction, 
Follow  Leader's rhythm, think of the follower, always!), etc. 
*Etiquette  if you need to turn someone down 
*Dancing  with people of a different dance level (when to help or just dance, 
how do you  know what the other person knows, what's the main objective, 
never apologize for  your dancing), etc. 
*Flow of  the dance floor, where on the floor to dance each style
