Hello to All:

RE: Brain Surgery for benign "Hemangioblastoma" performed by Chief
Neurologist Surgeon Dr. Mark Larkins @ Regions Hospital on Nov. 17th/He is 95% healed
and back to full time work.

I want to thank everyone for their many prayers and over 225 e-mails of
support for my son, Matthew Schaefer.

Three-3 months ago today, Matt had the most challenging day of his young 28
year old life. He had major surgery on a benign brain tumor. I am pleased
to report that he is 95% healed and has returned to full time work at MN Dept.
of Revenue. He reports that there is some stiffness in his neck which will
heal itself over time. Praise the Lord. For those curious as to the
medical cost, the bill came to $100,000.

Free to send Matt and e-mail of support and congratulations at
_Matthew.Schaefer at state.mn.us_ (mailto:Matthew.Schaefer at state.mn.us) .

On another positive note, SSgt John Marquardt, (my former Waikiki roommate)
who just returned from fighting the war in Iraq (_sp0530 at aol.com_
(mailto:sp0530 at aol.com) ) writes....

Hi Ron,

Sorry to not have written lately. I do not check this e-mail very often
since I do not have Internet available where I am living.

My active duty orders officially ended on the 9th of February. I had to
start the semester a little bit late, but I am mostly caught up. It's not an
easy task since I am taking 19 credits. I am not going to be working any part
time jobs while I'm in this semester, so I figured I would keep myself busy
with a couple of extra classes. I should graduate by May with a Japanese
Language degree, and then I will likely go back on military orders for some
additional training or possibly another deployment.

Thank you for the e-mails and the information. I am currently staying in
Kailua, renting short term out of a 4 bedroom house for $275 every 2 weeks. I
can stay here as long as I wish, but I really dislike the commute to U of
HI, so I will move out by the end of this month to find a place in town. The
number of available apartments seem to be on the increase from January,
although the rents are still outrageous. One option is a U of HI dormitory on
Beretania street for about $450 a month. Unfortunately, I would have to move
out by March 18th if I should choose that place due to Spring Break. It
seems like a decent temporary situation. I am rather reluctant to get a long term
lease since I may leave Hawaii soon after graduation. I hope to take a few
weeks off to visit my family in Hartland Wisconsin.

Well, I hope you are enjoying the Minnesota winter.

Take care.

John Marquardt

For my HI friends watching the weather news, it is bitterly cold with -10F
and a wind chill of -25F. Northern MN is reporting wind chills of -50F.
This is the coldest weather of the season as Spring is just one-1 month away.

Oh how I wish I were on Waikiki Beach...Cowboy Bill...aka...Ron Schaefer

Matt Schaefer with girlfriend Tiffany, who provided much support during his
brain surgery recovery. Thanks Tiffany.
